Baby Boomers Are Economic Boom to Rural America
Up to 20% of the 79 million baby boomers, the generation of post-World War II Americans born from 1946 through 1964, are expected to move to a new state once they quit working, double previous levels. States are rushing to lure retirees.
In some towns, this next generation of retirees could help fill an economic void left by departed industries. Many boomers, armed with 401(k) funds, inheritances and home equity from increased property values, have sizable disposable incomes.
Pay Attention to the Minority Audience
The DVD business is 8 years old and its once-explosive growth is heading for single digits. New markets are crucial to the home-viewing business and minorities are heavy consumers of home enterntainment.
Research indicates that Caucasians purchased an average 8.8 DVDs during the last 6 months, Latino Americans purchased an average of 13.1 DVDs and African-Americans purchased an average of 12.8 DVDs during the same period.
Latinos in the United States represent more than $700 billion in (overall) purchasing power and it is forecast that by 2010 this figure will increase to $1 trillion. The African-American market currently represents $650 billion in purchasing power and is on track to exceed $850 billion by 2010.
